Latin American Haiku: Small Poems, Big Images
Join Edgar Ulloa for a short bilingual creative writing workshop exploring haiku in Latin America. We will read brief examples by writers such as José Juan Tablada, Jorge Luis Borges, Mario Benedetti, and others who adapted the Japanese form in distinctive ways. Together we will look at image, rhythm, observation, surprise, and the relationship between a few words and a larger world. No previous experience with poetry or Spanish is required. Participants will write several short poems in Spanish, English, or bilingually, and anyone who wishes may share one during the Open Mic afterward.

Acompaña a Edgar Ulloa en un breve taller bilingüe de escritura creativa dedicado al haiku en América Latina. Leeremos ejemplos cortos de autores como José Juan Tablada, Jorge Luis Borges, Mario Benedetti y otros escritores que adaptaron la forma japonesa de maneras muy particulares. Exploraremos la imagen, el ritmo, la observación, la sorpresa y la capacidad de unas pocas palabras para abrir un mundo más amplio. No se necesita experiencia previa con poesía ni con el español. Los participantes escribirán varios poemas breves en español, inglés o de manera bilingüe, y quien quiera podrá compartir uno durante el Open Mic.
Edgar Ulloa Lujan, Ph.D., is Assistant Professor of Spanish and Interdisciplinary Studies at Lakeland University. He holds a Ph.D. in Spanish Literature and Cultural Studies from Georgetown University and an MFA in Creative Writing in Spanish from New York University.
He is a bilingual poet, composer, and multimedia artist whose work brings together music, writing, and performance. His creative project Mi Juaritos explores memory, identity, and border experience through poetry, sound, and digital media.
As an educator, he focuses on language, culture, and community, and is especially interested in creating inclusive spaces where people can learn Spanish through conversation, cultural exploration, and shared creative experience.
